Green Party MP Darleen Tana has been suspended amid allegations she is linked to migrant exploitation at her husband’s company. A statement from the Greens’ co-leaders said Tana was suspended on Thursday afternoon because it was a conflict of interest with her small business portfolio.
The claims first came to light on February 1 when Tana informed the party a complaint had been made to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) by a worker at her husband’s business, E-Bikes NZ.
“On February 9, the party was notified of a second complaint to the ERA,” the statement reads. These complaints included allegations against Ms. Tana. Ms. Tana has not been a director or shareholder of E Cycles NZ since 2019.”
She was suspended after it became apparent, she may have previously been aware of the allegations. As Green party co-leader, Chloe Swarbrick told Mike Hosking this morning, an independent lawyer is conducting the investigation.
Now these are only allegations - as we know there is to be an independent investigation. If Darleen is lost to politics that would be a shame. She appears to be no dumb bunny - Darleen holds degrees in Chemical Technology and International Business Management with senior leadership experience in European telco (1997-2014), and SME manufacturing/retail in e-mobility here in Aotearoa (2014-2020).
But the Greens don't have all their sorrows to seek in the one day what with Golriz Gharaman pleading guilty to shoplifting yesterday and James Shaw quitting the party. Before everyone gets too uppity about the Greens and their moral failings though, all parties' MPs are living in glass houses, and it would not behoove them to throw stones.
We're only going back a few years - we simply don't have the time to go any further back - and there are some egregious sins that have been committed by MPs across the spectrum from 2017 onwards.
Most of us can commit errors of judgment, even criminal activity of drink driving and continue in our jobs?
Is it the party selection process or is it the fact that we are all flawed and imperfect? And we have to accept that it's across the political spectrum now.
No one party is blameless or faultless.

Can someone please explain to me how the hell a Greens appointed lawyer can be "independent"?
"Before everyone gets too uppity about the Greens and their moral failings though, all parties' MPs are living in glass houses, and it would not behoove them to throw stones."
Yes...but..it's the Greens who constantly put themselves out there as the only moral, ethical choice for voters. They endlessly attack other parties for their lack of ethics, for their pure evil intentions.
And then they get caught out brushing something egregiously dodgy under the carpet. Nothing to see here, they say. Not just once (Kerekere). Not even twice (Gharaman) but three times (Tana). The Greens are not just irrational lunatics - they are also enormous hypocrites. They are the ones constantly throwing stones from inside their own glasshouse.
Kerre, I agree. I also congratulate you for putting a balanced perspective on it.....shame however as we do not get balance from the msm. I would have preferred an attack piece on this woman just to even it up slightly on what the msm do to 'good politicians ' who don't have the poor history like their counterparts on the left.
However most people will have noticed a common thread here. Most of the poor behavior is coming from the left, im sure the msm willhave swathes of journos trying to dig up scandals on the right, im just wondering how many tvnz fte's are committed to this task? By just attacking the left which is pretty easy to do, are we lowering ourselves down to the lefts level, which you have to admit is pretty low so the only way for these guy is probably up, I'd have to admit!
A few names spring to mind:
Tinetti, Nash, woods, mahuta, Davidson, Davis, Williams, Allen, Lee's Galloway, Ardern, Chippy, Robertson., Garmahan, Shaw, Swarbrick and now Tana - no doubt I've missed many off the list . This lot have either gone in shameful circumstances or been fired or in the case of ardern, chipkins and a couple of others being useless and having implementing weird ideologies such as race based theories appear not to be worthy of being sacked.
What I'm getting at is imo there appears to be a lower quality of person representing the left. Why is this? Is it that there just are not good people on the left side, or are these actually the best that they have?
I'm stunned the media are reporting it, I have a feeling they know more, but are desperately trying to minimize damage to their beloved labour and green mates.
I'm loving it....we should run a poll as to who will be next. The problem is that the left will manage to find another low life to replace the disgraced disposed low life with....they do seem to have an abundance of crap people on the left.
Full credit goes to the great journos and reporting that occurs on sites such as this to give balance to the biased reporting we get from the likes of tvnz and newshub. Keep up the great work.
Shilling for the Greens Kerre?
