Ross Meurant: Mathew 10.36

A Pagan though I now be, I once upon a time grew up in rural NZ under the cloak of Christianity and I do recall a few lessons from Sunday School.

One was:  Mathew 10.36.  ‘A man's enemies will be the members of his own household.’

Lieutenant Breaker Murant reverted to this lament at his execution by firing squad for obeying Lord Kitchener’s commands – “Show no mercy”.

As I take a look at National’s performance, I wonder how applicable might be this Script  to the very concerning atrophy of this once great Political Party.

Jump back in time, I penned:

“The irony of the land grab however, by my assessment, falls squarely at the feet of former Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir John Key and his Attorney General Chris Finlayson.

It was the National government of 2011 which overturned the protection against Maori land grab which had been provided by Prime Minister Helen Clark’s Labour government in 2004 when parliament passed the Foreshore and Seabed Act which deemed the title to be held by the Crown.

Helen Clark made it clear to the then Chief Justice Sian Elias, following the latter’s speculative commentary about the sanctity of Maori Customary law, that the ultimate law-making body in New Zealand was its sovereign parliament.

Helen Clark’s protection was repealed and replaced by National’s John Key via the Marine and Coastal Area Act 2011.  (1)

In my view, unquestionably, the ignition to the resurgence of Maori Separatism, lies at the doorstop of John Key.

Now we have Christopher Luxon, who by many accounts, appears to have been ushered into a safe National constituency by John Key and also touted as the leader National was lacking under Hon Judith Collins (whom John Key had previously dismissed from Cabinet).

Chris Luxon’s failure to unequivocally rebuke the Labour government for its racially divisive policies and pledge National to a policy of:

“Equality for all before the law, irrespective of race creed, colour, religion or beliefs”,

has been very disappointing to me and every one of the politically astute in the cabal with whom I consort (and could name if challenged – to validate my claim).

His penchant to apologies causes me to wonder whether he might soon apologise for being a male?

In my view, Mr Luxon lacks the confidence to lead National during a point in time when the party needs bold unequivocal leadership.

His pitiful performance over Abortion Rights is a case in point.   The simple answer to that issue was: “Abortion is a conscience vote.  It always has been thus, in the National caucus.”

I gave Chris Luxon a fair hearing when he arrived (2).

Today I say: “In the best interests of National, Mr Luxon – it’s time to move aside and allow  Nicola Willis to take the reins.

Meanwhile, I do ponder the applicability of Mathew 10.36 to the plight of my former fortress.

With you Ross. My family and I sat down last night and wailed at the lack of any gumption in national - than all at once said Nicola Willis! She does appear a forthright thinker and speaker, but she can hardly do it on her own. Luxon is entirely entitled to his own views on abortion in this land of free speech (so far)It was the silly media who produced the beat-up without any thought to the consequences.

While you are on the subject of tidying up National Ross, may I suggest that getting rid of the party president and replacing him with someone who has the backbone to ensure that the party returns to democracy would be a priority. i.e Governing for the people not the bloody party. Also a board who can deliver coherent policies to show that the party will deliver on promises to return the country to one that treats all people as equals, is not focused on driving the primary industries to ruin, will not bow to the corrupt UN with their climate change scam and fearmongering about "pandemics"and repeal ALL racist legislation. Then would be the time to find a leader who can lead and with the rest of his MPs hold the labour cult to account by showing up their corrupt actions in a awy that the msm cannot ignore.
Good luck with that.

Maybe John Key was a socialist sleeper. Planted in National to pave the way for a really "progressive" socialist government.
Now he's shoulder-tapped his successor, Luxon, who could easily pass for a member of the Labour Cabinet, to carry on where he Left off.

National are a spent and rudderless force. The sad thing is that most National voters are too set in their ways to realise and change their vote to another party who espouse the views National used to stand for many moons ago.

Like most mainstream centre-right parties in the West these days they seem to have lost their way and try to be just as woke as their Left wing opponents.
The poor voter has no real choice at all. Hence all the small populist parties springing up.

The answer is staring you all in the face. Vote ACT!

You obviously have been reading the Australian myths about Breaker Murant. Try reading Peter Fitzsimon's excellent book on the subject which shows conclusively that Murant was a war criminal, a murderer and a very nasty piece of work indeed and that his execution was entirely justified. One of the problems with the internet is that people put on it incorrect facts about subjects of which they have no knowledge.

the debate about luxon's views are as dumb as the one about a us senator opposing gay rights despite attending his son's gay wedding. one can hold a personal view while representing the views of their constituency, and they may be different - is that so hard to understand? if the people who elected this person don't care, why should it matter to the media and others outside the constituency?

ACT is the party vote agreed.

However MMP demonstrates that the constituency vote is also part of the deal and unless a rare event occurs ( like labour last elections outright win ie once in 9 elections), two parties at least must unite.

ACT won’t win more than one electorate.

Indeed, I and all I socialize with have had a gutsful of Luxon's fence sitting and will be party voting Act. Both Seymour & Luxon rightly deserve it.

Mr Cohen

perhaps you might read outside your favorite author.
As the constantly emerging in house wikipedia, you need to read more widely.

PS to Mr Cohen

I never read wiki - but thats obviously where you get your data from, which in turn enables you to such be a trenchant critic of the library for lazy people for lazy people.

Ross Meurant does not say Breaker Murant did not commit war crimes. He said Murant was shot for obeying Kitchener's orders. A typical "Nuremberg Defense", a topic on which I assume you might be well schooled to comment?

Or perhaps your better equipped to defend Israel's murder of Palestinian children - which is on Aljazeera, not wiki.

Breaker Morant was a superb film but you do not need to go to Australia to see fake history, our children are being indoctrinated with it. That film was entertainment but what is going on here is propaganda.
It is interesting that many supporters of both major parties are disenchanted with their leaders and looking for alternatives that might steer us away from maorification. While Act may be the best bet they will have to be more definitive and avoid being intimidated by the racism red herring.
