With the uncovering of the truth behind these unfortunate events, we are being treated to some interesting revelations which may well influence the results of the next elections in both countries - the general election in New Zealand in October and the 2024 presidential election in the US.
For me the most interesting factor in both cases is the change of public opinion towards similar historically important incidents as we learn more about what actually happened - who was responsible, how will the people react to this new found information that exonerates many who took part and what should happen to those who have abused their authority in order to gain political advantage.
These are the facts that are emerging.
I) The US Protest.
The so called “insurrection” began as a peaceful protest
by thousands who felt the 2020 Presidential election was stolen due to the last
minute suppression of information on a laptop owned by the unstable son of the
current President, Joe Biden.
It has now been revealed that the information in
question, should it have been in the hands of the public prior to voting day,
would almost certainly have resulted in a victory for the incumbent President
at the time, Donald Trump.
No wonder the Trump supporters thought they were robbed
which, in hindsight we now know is exactly what happened.
2) The New Zealand Protest.
The gathering at Parliament grounds also began as a peaceful protest against Government mandates that had stripped decent Kiwis of their democratic rights - many losing their jobs and livelihoods as a result of government’s misplaced pursuit of policies that were not only illegal, but ineffectual in halting the Covid spread that they were designed to stop.
What we now know.
The similarities with the US protest don’t stop there.
In both cases, the protestors’ ranks were infiltrated by
those who had ulterior motives that would eventually lead to the lawlessness
that inevitably followed. It is impossible to avoid this happening but sadly,
it did have unfortunate consequences for those involved on both occasions.
Although the collateral damage to public property was significant, in contrast
to the “Me Too” carnage that followed those real “insurrections” in the US,
they were relatively restrained reactions. But public opinion was carefully
managed in order to wrongly demonise most of the participants both here and
there. As with spontaneous riots that occur throughout the civilised world,
perception is often more important than the truth. These two events were
examples of that.
It will be interesting to see if the people responsible
for stage managing these momentous abuses of power will be held to account.
They should be but probably won’t. Here in NZ, one of the main protagonists,
the Parliamentary speaker Trevor Mallard was quickly shipped off to Ireland
where he is out of sight while the investigation staggers on to its inevitable
conclusion.
Now that the tide is turning, we can watch as the rats
desert the sinking ship.
The real culprits names are starting to look like the
list of those on trial at Nuremberg.
Hopefully the truth will out. Not before time.
Bring it on.

In NZ we give 'them' a gong...
A friend of mine was at the Jan 6 'insurrection' with his family. They joined thousands of other American families having a peaceful picnic on the lawn, and played frisbee with the police. Afterwards they all tidied up any mess and peacefully departed, only to hear later that they were a bunch of far-right extremists attempting to overthrow the Government. As he laughingly told me the insurrection idea is the most stupid political concept the Democrats have ever come up with, this bunch of people is the most heavily armed civilian demographic in the world, and if they had wanted an insurrection they would have been there with more firepower than the police could ever withstand. He's proud of the fact the US 2nd amendment allows him to know the people can resist tyranny like this. Instead of an insurrection, his reality was a family picnic on the capitol lawn.
The Wellington Protest was also about peaceful people resisting tyranny peacefully. It's a shame 120 MPs and all the media chose to side with tyranny. We need a revolution of ideology, new political parties and a new direction for NZ. I have never before seen such widespread disdain for all political parties represented in parliament.
Right on the money Clive.
Was there for the first two of those three weeks. The only time the peaceful nature of the protest changed was when the STATE didn't like what they saw, legitimate though it was, and set the dogs on them. The violence was all one way, 'cept at the very end. A shameful point in NZ's history.
Great comparison Clive. Those that gathered in Wgtn represented a sold base throughout New Zealand but not a single sitting politician had the guts to converse with them.
We share so many parallels with the States on all fronts. Both these left wing Govt’s rely heavily on managing the media in order to deliver their own creative brand of truth.
“In both cases, the protestors’ ranks were infiltrated by those who had ulterior motives that would eventually lead to the lawlessness that inevitably followed”
Just curious how you know this about the Wellington protest? I’ve always thought it was likely but haven’t seen any definite evidence for it.

We can’t know for sure although a genuine enquiry into the events would probably be able to identify the people l am referring to.
eg. Modern enquires have the ability to identify rouge participants using face recognition methods that will provide an accurate assessment of who were involved in the riotous behaviour as opposed to the bulk of participants who were there making a peaceful protest.
We can all remember those thugs raging across our TV screens who were there in Wellington taking advantage of the opportunity to confront the police, throwing bricks and rocks and other projectiles that caused serious injuries.
These individuals were the ones responsible for the sorry end to the peaceful protest.
They are the people, many of whom will be known to police or even the SIS as professional agitators.
The US film coverage of the Jan 6th ‘insurrection’ clearly identifies individuals who were encouraging the populace to riot.
From what we have learned since, there is a suggestion that one of these agitators has links to the FBI, which, should it be confirmed, would turn the whole public perception of that event on its head.
We shall see.

It is a very plausible inference that agents provocateur were involved in the Wellington protest (specifically, right at the end) mostly because they were nearly all masked with bandanas and they only showed up the day the riot police did. And moreover, who benefitted the most from overtly "violent protestors"? The Government did, both in New Zealand and in the case of January 6th.
Both these protests were violent – that’s for all to see on numerous videos. For that reason, they demand being condemned without qualification. In the case of the insurrection, 6 people died and many others injured.
The claim that if the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop – stolen by the way – were known before the election the 7 million majority that Biden polled would not have happened and Trump would now be in his second term is, frankly, laughable.
In fact, Trump claims that he actually won “by a lot”, whatever that means. No rational person believes that, including many GOP leaders, Trump’s argument being that he was denied victory due to a corrupt election process.
Even Fox News front people didn’t believe it. We now know that they were emailing one another saying it was nonsense, while continually broadcasting the lie. Fox News is now being sued for $1.5 billion by the company that supplied the election voting machines. Hopefully they’ll win.

"Both these protests were violent – that’s for all to see on numerous videos. For that reason, they demand being condemned without qualification."
What a ridiculous argument completely lacking nuance. On the principle of your rationale, no tyranny, despotism or dictatorship or any other system that lost public legitimacy would or could ever be justifiably overthrown by violent popular revolt.
"But Wellington and Jan 6th were different [for reasons]" you may object – well, I'm sure that this is exactly what the supporters of any status quo power would be bound to say in condemning any real challenge to their rule.

(addition to previous comment)
1. Each of the people who died on Jan 6th were actually Trump supporters, one shot by a Capitol policeman, another suffocated by Capitol police, and the rest via medical events (your implication being that Trump supporters had been the party who had killed people).
2. You call Jan 6th an "insurrection" – why, in that case, has nobody been charged with the crime of "insurrection", despite the largest federal investigation in US history (and, by the way, an investigation that was the complete opposite in intensity and scope as contrasted with the very reason why there was a protest in DC the first place, i.e. the 2020 election process).
It appears that Ewan McGregor is a MSM junky. This platform must be very confusing for him.
For those who obviously have difficulty with reality, it is worth remembering that the subject of this piece was deliberately chosen - intended to be a discussion concerning the truth that is emerging about both protests.
It would appear from the evidence that is now in front of all to see that we have been fed lies by both administrations that have condemned innocent people to time in prison and wrongly besmirched the reputations of others.
Yet the sycophantic supporters of those lies will keep on digging consumed by the hate that is their sole purpose for living.
It is a sad spectacle but no doubt one we will have to endure until a time when most intelligent observers have moved on to some other discovery where truth prevails.
I’m not sure l have the stamina for the wait but will certainly give it a go in the meantime.
Yes Rob, it’s surprising as to what you can pick up on the MSM. You should try it sometime. For instance, just today I learnt that Rupert Murdoch - yes, Rupert Murdock of Fox News - has admitted under oath that Biden did not steal the election, but won it fairly. So Murdoch is saying one thing, and Murdoch’s Fox News is saying the opposite. (He also has recently admitted that Fox was giving Biden’s paid-for election ads to Kushner prior to their being published. That’s just by the way.) And I see, too, that no less than 500 of the insurrectionists have actually pleaded guilty!
And this from Mitch McConnell, Senate GOP Leader; “It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that’s completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks.” (He has from the start accepted that Biden won fairly and squarely.) That’s in today’s news. We’ve had two years of it.
So, who do I believe? These guys, or the author of this opinion piece? I think it’s just a lot of nonsense.
You can stop pretending Ewan. It is pretty obvious that your information is sourced from those who share your idealogical persuasion.
Nothing particularly wrong with that - we all do that to a greater or lesser extent some times.
But we can’t all be right all of the time and most of us allow for unintentional mistakes but your version is based on a naked hatred which is always likely to interfere with your ability to think rationally.
No surprise then that those Republicans who you use to bolster your criticism of Trump and others who have openly displayed their contempt for the former President - Cheeney, Romney and McConnell to name a few. They are hardly impartial observers.
Unfortunately, your defense of the indefensible is becoming an untenable position.
The tide is turning and your false champions of liberty are running away from their time in the sun - but they can’t hide!
Soon it will be only those who have benefitted from the lies for so long who are hauled to account and justice will be seen to be done .
Don’t suppose you will be sticking around for the reckoning. If l was you, l wouldn’t either.
Getting a bit personal there, Clive; “…naked hatred which is always likely to interfere with your ability to think rationally.” Other than that, it’s unworthy of a response, but I’ll definitely by ‘sticking around for the reckoning’. Meet you there.
If the truth exposes the personal obsessions of my detractors then so be it. Your misplaced loyalties are there for all to see Ewan but l doubt it will stop you carrying on with your vendettas.
